    C1 Differentail to housing nuts

What is the "correct" nut ? The normal repo suppliers provide a tall nut that is much longer than the threads on the axle housing studs. The pictures in the ST-12 clearly show normal height nuts with a portion of the studs through the nut. The ST-12 refers to the 61 Shop Manual for installation. In the 61 Shop Manual it refers to those nuts as "sealing lock nuts".

    Thanks

I don't know where the repro suppliers get the idea that those ten studs took "tall" nuts with washers; every original Corvette axle I've ever seen has plain ordinary steel nuts with no washers.

John, I agree on the standard nut issue - but my 56 - which I am almost sure was unmolested - had copper washers under the standard nuts. Steve

            John,

I agree also, as my '56 had standard nuts and copper washers from a long way back.

Standard nuts are correct--I've also looked at over 300 60-62 cars with original rear ends over the past 30 years--not one of them had washers under the nuts, but I don't quarrel with that on the 56's.

Rev: agree. my 61 and the 62 i purchased from you years ago lack the brass/copper flat washers. however, i THINK the 56 and 57's did have the flat washer.mike

My 57 had the washers and used short nuts. They looked original but who really knows. It is a late Mar or 1st of Apr car.

                      John,
From my old parts manual circa 1973. Part number 3750570 58-61 corvette "nut assembly carrier attaching (3/8 x 24) (w/sealing washers)"
My 57 also had the copper sealing washers and it had the original pumpkin in it.

agree with previous post that 53-57(at least) had the copper flat washers but by at least 61, there were no washers acting as sealants. mike
