    '63 340HP running hot?!

Sorry if this is too detailed, but need the help. The engine is new (bored 30 over and all new components), has about 3 hours plus run time. It was started/ran almost a year ago by just cycling water through the block with the garden hose. Now installed in the car with a new 180 thermostat, rebuilt water pump, new DeWitts radiator and new expansion tank, engine wants to temp between 210 to 225 using a mechanical gauge. This mirrors (almost) the gauge inside the car when hooked to the sending unit on the intake manifold. The hotter then engine gets, rpm's start dropping off. On short jaunt and driving no more than a mile the rpm's dropped from 900 down to 600? Possbily heat related? Not sure what to do next? I believe that is too high a temperature even for a new engine and there's an lack of cooling/over heating issue. Just don't know what to consider next? Any help appreciated. Michael G. #28614

Check the archives. The one item you don't mention is the timing curve. There is a wealth of information in the archives regarding ignition timing as relates to overtemp condition. That's probably the first thing to check.

Timing was checked for vaccum and mechanical operation. Appeared to be working properly. Timing set at 7 to 8 degrees advanced. Thanks

Initial timing should be set in the range of 10-14. Also, you should have a NAPA/Echlin VC1810 vacuun can, which should be pulled to the stop at idle, so your total idle timing should be 26 to 30 degrees with the vacuum can connected.

Also check the function of your heat riser valve.
