1969 heater box to firewall sealer?

I'm replacing the heater core in my non-A/C '69 smallblock car. I have removed the heater box from within the engine compartment and the heater core is out. What is the recommended material to use for resealing the heater box to firewall area? It was sealed with some goopy black material that seems to be some kind of non-hardening sealer. Is there a commonly available product that would serve in this same function?

    Thanks,
    Shannon

One product that might work well for sealing the heater box is the window sealer ribbon that you can get at your local NAPA parts store. These ribbons come in several sizes. The thinnest one I believe is the 1/8" diameter. A box runs about $12-$13.
