    1963 Wheel Paint

    Folks,

Would the Eastwood Aerosol Paint meet NCRS judging standards for my 1963 steel wheels? Here is the description from Eastwood's web site:

Satin Black Wheel Paint 12 oz Aerosol Item No. - 10085 Z
This high solids paint provides excellent coverage and is extremely
durable and chip resistant. Ideal for any wheel requiring a black finish.
Great for refinishing black backgrounds on chrome wheels and even steel
rims covered with hubcaps. The proper sheen of black, not too glossy,
not too flat! One can covers 6 sq. ft. or two to four wheels depending on
application. Great for inside wheel surfaces. Acrylic Lacquer formulation.
    9-15% gloss. Max Temp 250 degrees F.

    Rick -

Original wheels were sprayed with high-gloss wheel enamel; I don't think "satin" fills the bill.

      John,

thanks for the response - was looking at Noland's book and also Dobbin's book and both stated "semi-gloss" paint. I am trying to make sure I paint correct color as I do want to try to TOP FLIGHT my 1963 once I get everything back in order. One major point deduct area was on the wheels and tires when I took the car to the local NCRS show here in Maryland in March.

I believe wheels were dip painted in a black paint similar to bumper brackets, etc. (Krylon 1613 style sheen) Then sprayed with gloss enamel on the outer surface.

Dennis is correct - the wheels were dip-primed black (semi-gloss), then the front face of the wheels were sprayed with high-gloss wheel enamel.
