Have a 65 with an M21--has a Hurst linkage--Shift it into reverse, back up, go to shift into first, and it locks up in neutral, where all I have is reverse and neutral. Any adjustment help would be appreciated

Re: C2 Hurst Shift Linkage Adjustment
when one bought a hurst comp plus in the 60's , ol George supplied an L-shaped piece of rod that was designed to insert thru both sides of the shifter housing as well as a hole in each of the 3 shifter arms. it'll be difficult to fabricate the rod with the shifter on the 4 speed and once shifter on bench, you'll have an easier time of seeing where the 5 holes/slots are located that were there for adjustment purposes. mike- Top

Re: C2 Hurst Shift Linkage Adjustment
I have used Hurst shifters for years, with great results. If you don't have the L-shaped rod that came with the shifter, here's a remedy. Get a 1/4"x 20 NC bolt approximately 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 inches long. Disconnect the shifter arms fron the transmission. Use a small open-end wrench to put each shifter fork in neutral. Line up all three arms on the shifter tower and insert the 1/4'x 20 bolt all the way through the shifter tower. The bolt will thread into the shifter mount. You may have to wiggle each shifter arm to achieve alignment so that the bolt can be screwed in.
Once you have gotten this far, all you have to do is screw the shifter rods in or out until each shifter arm will easily slip onto the transmission shifter forks. Thghten them down, remove the bolt you installed in the tower and the transmission should shift very well.
The shifter should also have a bolt and jam nut assembly on the front and the rear of the shifter tower. These are to prevent over-shifting of the transmission. To adjust them, loosen the jam nuts, shift into second gear, screw the rear bolt in until it just barely touches the second-gear shifter arm, back the bolt off 2 or 3 turns and tighten the jam nut. Shift into third geat and adjust the front stop inn the same manner you adjusted the rear stop.
Good luck.

I have a 63 roadster with a Hurst shifter. When I got the body off, I noticed that a hole had been cut in the center crossmember. I was told that it was probably cut to accommodate the Hurst shifter. Is that really necessary to use the Hurst shifter, or did someone just take a short cut instead of making the correct application?

Re: C2 Hurst Shift Linkage Adjustment
Steve,
Most of my Hurst shifter experience with Corvettes is with '58 through '62. I have never found it necessary to modify the transmission mount to install a Hurst unit.
It is possible that on Mid-years a crossmember modification is necessary, but I doubt it. It sounds to me like the installer of the shifter in your car either didn't have the correct shifter or he was just too lazy to do the installation correctly.
You might try contacting the Hurst technical help line and get their opinion, too.
