My 1970 is leaking power steering fluid from both the power steering dampening cylinder and the steering valve. The question is this: Is the rebuild kits the way to go or should I buy a rebuilt one. WOuld rather save the money and rebuild it myself but is this the way to go? Is it difficult or are there any tricks to doing it? Thanks for the help.

Re: C3 Power Steering Rebuild
Don, in my opinion, it is typically better to rebuild your original components or have them professionally rebuilt.
If you have others rebuild your components, you should make it clear that you want your original parts back, and note the dates or mark them in some discreet way to insure that you do get them back. I am sure that the cylinder is dated and the valve is probably dated. Some would say it doesn't matter, and to just replace them with exchange stuff off the shelf, but I like to keep my car as original as possible. It is true that no one will be checking these dates.
One comment on the control valve: there is an aluminum cover on one end that has a "X" stamped on it for Corvette only. The rebuilder must be careful to preserve and re-use this cover, because the new replacement cover will probably have a "C" on it. This is one detail on the valve that can cause you some judging point deducts.- Top

Re: C3 Power Steering Rebuild
Installed new seals on my power steering cylinder about 15-17 years ago. Was able to get the parts from GM, don't know if they are still available now. The unit is still working with no leaks. The power steering valve is still okay after 33 years, have only put a new rubber cover on it. You should be able to stop the leaks in your cylinder. I don't remember any special tools used.- Top
