    C1- 62 Clock

The clock in my 62 was working perfectly, keeping great time. Then it just stopped. I checked and found 12v going to the clock at the back connection. Any suggestions what else I can look at before pulling it out?

It's very likely the clock. These old "tic-toc" movement clocks are very sensitive to a variety of maladies. Chevrolet used to recommend that when reconnecting a battery, one should first touch the negative terminal to the battery. If a spall spark was seen, then the cable should be removed from the battery, the clock allowed to "wind down", and then the prodedure repeated until there was no spark seen at the battery when the cable was touched. Supposedly, this procedure was to ensure that the clock would not be damaged. Hardly anyone ever followed this procedure and they may have, eventually dropped it from service manuals. However, this may also be why a lot of these old clocks fail.

In any event and notwithstanding the above, "tic-toc" clocks are far too unreliable for me. I recommend only the use of a quartz movement clock. Much more trouble-free and much more accurate. Some folks say that you can distinguish a "tic-toc" from a quartz movement (and, consequently, fail a "PV" or lose judging points). I disagree; I don't think that anyone call POSITIVELY distinguish a "tic-toc" movement from a quartz movement unless they remove the clock. The movement characteristics of the second hand are NOT an accurate way to distinguish "tic-toc" from quartz.

Thanks for your advice. I don't plan on having the car judged,so the quartz movement is the way to go. My 67 has the quartz movement and is trouble free.
Where can I purchase a quartz movement? Would it be best to send out and have it done?

I would like to know where I can get a quartz movement for my 58 clock also. CC sells a kit for the mid years but not one for us solid axles. Does somebody else sell the kit? I like to do things myself.

        Thanks

          Rob and Kris-----

I don't find any listed for 53-62, either. I thought that the kits were the same as the 63-82, but maybe not.

Anyway, I'd recommend contacting Instrument Service Company of Roscoe, IL at 815-623-2993. If anyone can fix you up with a kit, it will be them.

First of all , remove your clock. All you have to do is push in about 1/8" and turn counter clockwise. Likely, the points are stuck and the clock is not winding. Sometimes you get lucky and can revive the clock by cleaning the points. If not, send the clock to The Clockworks. They will repair your clock for $40, or they can convert it to quartz for around $130. The C1 clocks do not have a DIY kit available because none of the movements available will fit without modification.

You can find The Clockworks if you do a web search. They do a super job, charge very fair prices, and have a very quick turn around time. Give them a call before you send your clock so they can tell you what the return postage is.

I assume you mean to push in on the face about 1/8'' and turn CC. What type of spring is holding it? Is the reinstall just the opposite?

                Re: C1- 62 Clock

It's a flat spring around the perimeter of the clock. Install is reverse proceedure. If your clock is stuck from a little surgace corrosion, you may need to reach around the back of the console and twist while someone else pushes. If it won't push in, try a little penetrant around the outside and let it sit for a while.

Ed, I have a similar problem in that my 62 clock works intermittently. Can you tell me what exactly are the points you referred to that may need cleaning. I'm going to try to pull the clock out as suggested and see if that's the problem.

Inside the clock there is a set of breaker points similar to a distributer, which winds the mechanism.

It has just come to my attention that someone is repoping the 58-62 clock. Probably the 55-57 Chevy guys. Anyway, if utter originality isn't a concern, Corvette Central has the repo's for $120.

I pulled the clock out,but was unable to get it to work. I e-mailed the Clock Works and got a very nice and quick reply back. I am sending to them first thing in the morning for a complete mechanical overhaul. They said that it would be sent back in 24 hours. You have to like that! There was a sticker from another clock repair vendor on the clock and it was dated 10/90. I guess thirteen years is not bad!
