68 C-3 Wheel torques and other

    Guys:

I switch between a set of 15" Cragar SuperSports and a set of Rallyes and was wondering what torque to use on the Cragar lugs.

Having to use the "spacers" with the Cragars to clear the calipers. I understand that you should check the torque every 100 miles or so when you use them.

Believe the standard nut torque with the Rallyes is 60 lb/ft.

Is that enough with the Cragars? They have the elongated holes with the offset washers and the proper lugs from Cragar.

Also, if I remove the steering wheel (need to check and/or replace the turn signal switch mechanism) will that allow me to remove the driver side dash without lowering the steering column?

Lastly, my 327/350hp came with a high rise aluminum manifold and Edelbrock 1806 with electric choke. Having a clearance problem with the air cleaner nut (just barely rubs on the underside of the hood). It's a chrome air cleaner dimensionally same as the stock one I'm pretty sure.

Any recommendations on an air cleaner base that will drop the assm. a bit, or a complete air cleaner assm. that I could get to alleviate this problem?

Thanks in advance for any help,

    Rich

Re: 68 C-3 Wheel torques and other

Richard I have always torqued the lug nuts at 75 foot pounds for the original steel rims on my 68 and 70. Pretty sure I read that in the service manual. Don't know what Crager rims require. The torque on my 85 is 100 ft pounds with aluminum wheels. My 68 has the original open element air cleaner and no hood clearance problems. The original air cleaner is designed to allow the base of the air filter to be lower than the opening of the carb, kind of a drop down effect. I have a ZZ1 crate engine in my 70 and it has a high rise LT-1 type alum intake. I used the same type of GM open element air cleaner and have no problems with clearance with the hood. My 70 came with the dual inlet air filter and was not usable due to the hood clearance. If you had the GM open element air cleaner this could solve your problem.
