    C1 Engine Temp

After driving my '56 in cool and hot weather I used an IR temp reader and it is at 200 degrees all the time. On a real cool day it might drop to 195. Is 200 too hot? It never gurgles or burps when I shut it off.

Steve - I'm a little surprised it runs that hot. Assume 160, 170 or 180 thermostat. My '57 ran pretty cool compared to my '62's with the aluminum radiator. (Go Figure...) Dennis

it is purported that nitrous oxide lowers the temp of a 283 by 40 degrees.Sniffing such noxious gases by the operator lowers his IQ by an equivalent 40 points.U-joints 4 us. mike

FIrst thing to do is to establish if the engine is really running 200*. Check the temp using an IR gun or a meat thermometer taped to the bottom of the top radiator hose.

If it really is 200* and you have the proper 180* thermostat, then your cooling system isn't doing the job. Changing to a 160* thermostat or removing the thermostat is NOT the answer. This will have NO effect on maximum temperature.

There are tons of posts in the archives on this subject. The most common causes of overheat (or marginal performance as we see here), are:

            1. Dirty cooling system (internal or external or both)
            2. Inadequate air flow (fan, shroud, seals, etc.)
            3. Collapsing lower radiator hose (poor circulation)
            4. Insufficient timing advance

              Steve,
I also have a '56 with original engine and it run's at 180 degree as per the temperature gauge and as measured with IR gun. The only time it will increase slightly, but not much, is when I'm in traffic.
