I have a early 1961 with a top tank radiator. Is the radiator suppose to be painted black? Thanks, Joe DeLuca #37862

Re: who's got it right?
I know that the JG says "no paint" and that this is conventional wisdom, FWIW. I have seen Loren's previous post to the contrary. I, too, am interested in the real answer. Can anyone comment on the evidence either supporting or refuting the "no paint" opinion? Is there reason to believe that the painting changed as a function of production date? Very interested in seeing this debate play out to some logical conclusion... Thank you, Karl- Top

Re: C1 TOP TANK RADIATOR - PAINTED?
I claim no expert status, however the research done on the radiator issue was quite extensive and those results ended up in the TIM/JG. Most of that information came directly from Harrison. I also thought the information generated a Restorer article, but I may be mistaken. I owned a 1960 for a period of time and concluded its top tank should not be painted. I have forgotten what the JG says about early 61 cars. Hell, I can't remember when the top tank rads went away or what I had for lunch yesterday... Dennis- Top

I just sent Joe some photos of photos
showing at least two of the Cunningham cars and the Camoradi car - both at Sebring and Le Mans - with unpainted top tanks and painted cores. I also sent a picture of an all-black 60B top tank in my possession - ribbed tank - that I BELIEVE to be for service replacement.- Top

Painted Top Tank Radiators...
When this discussion came up in June I had to stop and try for some research. Noland Adams book shows a 1960 top tank unpainted...very early 1961's (to approx. serial #1500)appeared with either '60 style copper or '60 top tank aluminum...Early 1961 aluminum were unpainted; mid-to-late 1961 radiators and later were painted gloss black...several early race cars show painted black...Observed in Nashville was a 1961 (built in 1960) original? car with an "unpainted top tank...For looks and (Judging), unpainted is were I left this subject.- Top
