Re: Click on trim and VIN tags -- (should have add
Jim: the vin and trim tags pictured on ebay are not 66 vet tags. a 66 vet vin # example would be 194676Sxxxxx where the x's would be numerics.on a vet trim plate, next to STYLE, one would find either 437(coupe) or 467(roadster). the judging manuals for the midyears discuss vin and trim tags as used in vets. i'd guess the ebay vet has pass car or truck data plates on it. stay away from such vets. mike- Top

Re: What's the big deal
it will become a big deal when the DMV discovers its not a corvette vin #. If the title that goes with the vet matches the vin tag shown on ebay, one would be entering illegal waters if one was to get a repro vin tag and then have to pick a vin # common to another 66 vet. then one would have to come up with a title matching the vin # one chose. likelihood of someone picking a 66 vet vin # from a 66 that was scraped years ago is slim to none.mike- Top

Doesn't a correct Corvette VIN tag have those "rose" shaped rivets?- Top

Re: What's the big deal
It also might be a big deal when you try to insure it. I thought that insurance companies check the VIN against the property being insured to make sure it matches - maybe they don't do this on classics? If not, you can bet there would be an issue when you file a claim.
Also, there is the issue of how the car ended up with this tag. Obviously it was swapped at one time. The question is why? Was the car stolen? Why would someone do this and not use a state issued VIN? Its very strange because to create a new title a law enforcement officer usually needs to look at the car and verify the VIN. This should include a check of the VIN which should have indicated it wasn't a Vette.
A real mess. You would have to assume the seller has no knowledge of this or they would not be showing photos of the VIN and trim tag.- Top
