    63 PB master cylinder

Seems these units are hard to find. Supposly PB and non PB units use the same casting number but the PB unit has a bleeding screw. Does anyone know what it would take to convert a non PB version into a PB unit. Thanks in advance.

    Re: 63 PB master cylinder

63 PB and non PB original master cylinders with the correct 7/8" bore are both getting hard to find. They are also date coded. I do see them occasionally at flea markets. I don't think that there is any way to easily add a bleeder to a non PB cylinder, as the bleeders have a special "seat" machined in the base....like a wheel cylinder or brake caliper bleeder. It is probably more trouble than it's worth. You can find "look alike" master cylinders in many Corvairs of the era. They have a 1" bore, and are stamped as such. They use the same thumb screw lid. they're usually in good shape, as they are protected "in the trunk" of the car. Have you tried any of the used parts vendors? You should be able to locate one. They can easily be resleeved if needed. Hope this helps. Chuck

Drill a shallow hole and tap it with the correct tap. Add a bleeder for a "look alike" P.B. master cylinder. I've done it on 64's before. Not very hard, but a friend with a machine shop helps to get a perpendicular drilled hole.

Saw a real McCoy 7/8 jobby on a Corvair in a scrap yard, thought it was 'Corvette only' part, hesitated and missed it (el crusher). The scrap yard 'bible', Hollanders, calls the casting out for Chevy passenger cars of the era WITH metallic brake option. Doesn't mean they came that way from the factory as Hollanders' books only define what can be used as a functional substitue.

BUT, I've found where there's smoke, there's fire. With Hollanders books being used by thousands of scrap yards, the odds aren't bad that some old junker was once repaired by substitution and that 'Corvette only' part will wind up in a passenger car component location that Hollanders says it'll fit/function!
