    Oil filter 101

I have a cannister type filter on my 63. How is oil filtered in this set up? Does the oil enter the center of the paper filter, pass through the paper filter, then re enter the engine through the various holes along the perimeter of the cannister base? vice versa? neither? I am trying to gain a better understanding of this, as it seems I have been driving this car without the proper spring/washer/bolt assembly in place, allowing the filter element to rest on the bottom of the cannister unable to filter 1 ounce of oil. Thanks!

The oil, from the oli pump, enters the canister on the outside and after going through the filter is fed to the bearings, etc, through the center opening. There is a checkvalve that will allow the oil to pass directly to the center port if the filter gets plugged.

      Peter,
I'm missing my spring washer also. Goes on inside bottom of canister? Have you been able to find and order this part? Where?
      Best regards, Jon
