    1962 Wiper Motor

Wiper motor works if you open hood and push it on by hand. It will shut off from the dash, but not turn on or increase to high speed from there. Is there any adjustment to the amount of pressure it takes to turn on? Cleaned and lubed the slider. Is that an adjustment screw on the passanger side of the unit?
    Thanks for any input.

The screw on the side is for adjusting the armature. It sounds like you have a faulty switch. Remove the top cover and check for broken, dirty, or corroded switch components.

Shortly after getting my car, I used to reach under the dash and pull the cable to get the wiper to turn on. Problem was it did not always shut off using the knob. One day I arc welded my watchband to my wrist reaching under the dash and grounding out the aftermarket ammeter. I tossed the ammeter, repaired the original instrument cluster, and used part of a beer bottle cap to adjust and tighten the bowen cable. The bottle cap is still holding adjustmet, and I still have a scar shaped like a watchband-link on my wrist.

Take the cover off underneath the slider. The slider works a switch in there. When you take the cover off, you'll see it. Switch contacts could be dirty. On mine, the switch was difficult to move because of dirt and old grease. Clean it up, and you might be OK.

THAT just became one of my all time favorite stories... Can relate. Dennis

I've had the cover off, cleaned as much as I could. Still hard to turn on. Shouldn't it be as easy to turn on as it is to turn off? How much trouble to take apart and clean inside?

It's a lot of trouble to take apart. See the ST-12. It gives a good breakdown on how to take apart. Especially note the section on how to get the cover on the other half off - the one where the motor lives - how to build a special tool to hold the brushes back while you put the cover back on. It's do-able, but tricky. Yes, it should be equally easy to turn off as it is to turn on.

Never did understand why the previous owner had a set of aftermarket gauges mounted under the dash, when they were duplicates of the stock gauges that they were too lazy to fix.
Luckily the other blisters that formed as I was pulling the cherry red watchband off of my wrist did not scar my hand. I switched to leather watchbands after that, and finally gave up wearing watches, because it irritated the watch link scar.
