    61 Master Cylinder

My '61 has the original master cylinder and all original brake lines and fittings. It has never been rebuilt. Recently, the cylinder drained itself of brake fluid - no sign of where the fluid went. I filled again and it drained itself several times over a period of a few weeks. Filled it about 3 weeks ago and the culinder has not lost a drop. Drove it over the weekend, brakes are fine and still no leakage. These don't usually heal themselves. Any ideas?

It may be a wheel cylinder. Sometimes the caustic nature of brake fluid will cause seals to re-hydrate. I know people that use a little brake fluid in other parts of the drive train to rejuvenate seals. I have had a few master cylinders that leak, but after some use the leak stops. Now mind you I think that once they start to go they will always leak eventually. Pull the wheels and check the wheel cylinders. You will probably find evidence of a leak there. Eric #3182
