    82 AC Question

I have an 82, with R12 AC, and since the factory it has not been replaced. It puts out a nice flow of warm air. In the archives, there is mention of a company - Interdynamics - that has a drop in kit for charging with R134. Don't have to open anything up, no new hoses, nothing. My mechanic wants $1200-1500 to convert the system, with new o-rings, dessicant, etc.

Has anyone had any luck with Interdynamics? Will it cost me a lot down the road if something fails??? Should I bite the bullet or just be sweaty???

    Thanks for the help!!!

My recommendation would be to leave it as an R-12 system and have it serviced, checked for leaks, repaired if necessary, and re-filled with R-12. R-12 is expensive these days, but it's still available and it's a lot cheaper than a $1200 conversion. You don't need all that much to completely refill a system. As I recall, yours has a capacity of about 3 pounds. If you get all this done, you could be all set for years.

I agree with Joe's recommendation of using R12. If you go to www.id-usa.com their is a FAQ section for conversions. A co-worker does some auto work in his spare time and he has just put in the R134 like the company recommends. He converted his own car over a year ago and it is still cooling with the R134. If you find that your 82 has a small leak, the R134 can be bought at less than $5.00 a can which is a good deal to bring the system up to being usable when the warmer driving temps require air conditioning. To put R134 in your 82 you will need only about 80% of the R12 capacity when installing the R134.
