    '64 block configuration

This past weekend I installed the heads and intake on my block (all from '64-300 hp engine). As I was looking over the engine last night, I noticed a hole I hadn't seen before. It is on the surface the driver's side head mounts to, toward the top of the enngine. The hole is partially obscured by the rear edge of the head, but part of it can be seen. I have no recollection of taking anything out of this hole during disassembly, have no notes about it, and don't see it mentioned in the rebuilding books I have. What is it for?

    Mark,

That hole is supposed to be there. It is the hole that is the access to the rear cam bearing oil hole. Just make sure that there is a galley plug installed in that hole or you will end up with one heck of a leak when you fire it up. I actually tapped mine and installed a threaded plug to keep it from leaking. I think chevy actually went to the threaded plug later, but yours should have a pressed in plug.

The hole is threaded and appears to be without a plug of any kind. A straightened out paper clip goes in an inch and a half w/o hitting bottom. I am resigned to having to pull the intake and head off to see what is going on. So much for feeling good about making progress.
