    Speed Nut Question

    Folks,

How do you get the speed nuts to start on studs say for the fender emblems? And then once you get them started on how do you tighten them so they stay on!? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR RRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!
Trying to put new fender emblems on and the danged speed nuts either won't start on or if I get them to start on as soon as I apply any pressure they fall off in my hands!

install the speed nut with the emblem off the car. this way you can apply the pressure needed to get them started. you now have the stud threaded so it will be much easier to reinstall the speed nuts.

some repro emblems/scripts etc are hard chrome plated on the studs and the spped nuts, softer metal than others, supplied with these atypical repos need a die run on the stud, even if its a bench proceedure. mike

          Rick,

Sometime the speednut size in larger or smaller than the stud size. I have used the larger sizes and hammered on them to make them tighter. Again tighten them off of the car, this gives you the chance to fit them together and get a good tight fit.

If you have time to order one, for $8.70 Corvette Central sells a speednut installation tool, it fits two sizes of speednuts. It makes installion very easy

If the studs on your new emblem have chrome on them, you'll have Hell getting the speed nuts started; file/sand the chrome off the studs and the speed nuts will cut threads with no problem. Install the nuts once before you put the emblems on the car and the on-car install is a piece of cake.
