    C1 flywheel application

I'm trying to avoid clutch problems. I've disassembled my 56 and found a mismatched assortment of pieces. I'd like to replace the clutch with a three finger style similar to the original. To that end, I bought a flywheel for a 10-3/8" clutch (it had an 11" with diaphram clutch). It fits, the price was right and it was in excellent shape. But before I spend more $$ to have it resurfaced, I'd like to know what it's original application was. Casting number is 8705410 and it's dated K236. None of my reference materials covers flywheels. Anyone recognize this item?

    Bernard,
3705410 is listed for a '55 COMM (1st series). Date code indicates Nov. '56. I also recently desired a 3-finger B & B style (original style) clutch assembly for my '56. Carquest W04-515 clutch assembly consists of pressure plate, clutch disc, throwout bearing and pilot bearing. Unit appears high quality and made either by LuK or Sachs. No return core was required. Regards,

jim and bern. : I've had exceptional service out of a pressure plate rebuilt by Fort Wayne Clutch, 3 finger Borg and beck style, about 50 bucks. i prefer new B&B clutch discs. have a similiar setup in my 57 FI thats pulling 425hp out of a small block. have ripped and teared the ol vet and clutch still intact after numerous drag and autoXs. FT Wayne ads in hemmings. mike

Ditto on Fort Wayne Clutch....Sent them clutch parts on Monday, got 'em back on Tuesday. They're about 4 hours driving time away. Now that's SUPER SERVICE in my opinion.

Mike, Are you using a 10", 10-3/8" or 11" assembly?

Bernie: can't remember for sure as its been about 10 years since i built the cheater motor for the 57 fi but i'd guess its 11". what i did was call FT. wayne , tell them what i was building, insisted on 3 figer borg and beck press. plate that didn't require arnold Swartzenergers thigh musculature to depress, they sent plate, i went to shelf and pulled down a nos chevy disc and an aftermarket throw out bearing. I'm certain i measured the press plate face plate and choose an appropriate disc.I have the same set up in my 61 rpo that duntovd with the ft wayne press plate( no more effort to depress than stock diaphragm press plate but three finger plates don't stick to floor at 7000 rpm. call ft wayne for dimensions. good luck, mike

diaphragms do not stick to the floor if you never over center the pressure plate. you must check the release to make sure that it is never more than .030/.040 clearance between the PP and the disk. power shifted many times at 8000 rpm with a diaphragm clutch. also if you use a 11" pressure plate use a 10 1/2" disk so the edges can not feather and cause shiffing problems.
