    '65 Knockoff wheel adapters

Some number of years ago, the late Roby Price, via a set of NOS Knockoff wheels which he was showing, did a good job of convincing me that there was at least a possibility that one side of the car used adapers plated with cad (silver in color) and the opposite side used a gold Irridite wash over the cad, leaving a "gold" colored plating. Anyone shed some light on this? which side which, true or untrue?

    Re: '65 Knockoff wheel adapters

Hi Bill, I have seen a lot of original adapters over the years, they all appear to have been plated with one or the other or the processes you refer to. But the ones I have looked at were not plated with respect to left vs. right. We have all seen GM use "color" to help the line workers tell nearly identical parts apart, but the spinners were marked "L" or "R", I think this all the line workers had to go by. So how do I explain the different plating colers? I think, like so many of the parts GM used, they came from different suppliers. That said, I am willing to be convinced otherwise. What was Roby's story? WTY, did Roby ever show you his 1967 teak wheel? Bill

Can't comment on advice from late/great Mr. Price. The factory original KH adaptors on my 396 are, all-four, cad colored (what's left of the original plating). So, I'd tend to agree with Mr. Wilhelm as well as the current JG eventhough RH/LH color coding makes a heck of a lot of sense....

            Bill:

Prior to the repos, I cannot recall ever seeing an untouched adapter in the gold iridite. I emphasize "untouched". I also cannot visualize K-H treading in the liability pathway of color-coding for left and right when the pieces are already marked. If you need it, I have an old address (1980's) for the president of K-H. LL
