I am taking my rear diff. to a local perf. shop to install my rebuild kit with clutch pack, I got from Vansteel. He wanted to use a gasket called Tough Cork, but it isn't made for this rear. He doesnt like paper gaskets, so he said the next best is a silicone sealant. Good or bad??

Permatex makes a product called The Right Stuff. It comes in a can like Cheese Whiz where you push a nozzle on the top sideways to get the product out of the container. It's a gasket replacement product and it is something else. Expensive, but you get what you pay for ...

Silicone would be fine, but use one that is listed safe for O2 sensors. Some of the silicone sealers contain acetic acid (as in vinegar) as a curing agent. On vehicles that sit for extended periods of time, the vapors from the acetic acid can cause bearing to rust.
Loctite manufactures a product called Gasket Eliminator. It is not a silicone and works very well with machined surfaces such as differentialsDick Whittington- Top

Re: rear end sealant
Gentlemen - In re-installing my '67 3:55 posi three years ago, I don't remember using any gasket or sealant when putting it together. Just used an air tool to clean each mating surface.
Please don't tell me I've screwed-up in doing this, and didn't put a "gasket or sealant" between the cover and carrier.
