    1960 Charging System

I have a 1960 that shows a slight discharge when running and about a 30 amp discharge with the lights on. Is there a simple/easy set of instruction on how to test the system componets and the procedure for replaceing or repairing the regulator and generator. Also the regulator I took off has the coding 59/611235 55 amp 12v NG 234 on the underside. I assume given the age of the regulator that it is not oringinal but is it one that I should get rebuilt and if so, any suggestions.
    Thanks

Have you had the battery out lately? If so try jumping the battery terminal of the generator to the field terminal on generator. Also jump the two lower terminals of the voltage regulator. I had same problem and found this easy test in the archives.

As terry says you first need to try polarizing your generator by momentarily jumpng the battery and field terminals on the voltage regulator. If thsi doesn't do it, you can momentarily ground the field connection on the generator and test the generator output. It should be about 15 volts. If so, the regulator is probably bad. If it isn't, then the generator needs a rebuild.
