C2 rear spring _ dead horse

In light of recen posts on the subject, I'm sorry for flogging the horse, but I want to make sure I understand.

The instructions in my 63 shop manual (section 4-8)for installation of the rear spring are 1) place spring on carrier cover mounting surface..... 2) place center clamp plate in position, install bolts, torque to 55-75 lb. ft. 3) raise spring outer end with floor jack......

Does this procedure risk breaking the ears off of the differential cover?

Yes. Do not tighten the bracket bolts until the outer bolts are installed.
