C3 LS 5 valve stem seal .. need advice

I have been "smoking" out of the passenger bank most of the summer (blue smoke).. did a compression check etc .. all readings are within spec .. I am 100% sure it is a valve stem seal .. even though the heads were done over the winter .. I did go back and look to see what seal the rebuilder put on .. they are clevite part number 2161066 .. he used the same for both intake and exhaust .. (my book doesn't list them for the exhaust just intake) .. however, I am being told that they are OK as is by the rebuilder ... (of course I wouldn't expect him to say anything other).. so the question is "IS he right .. it doesn't matter" and secondly how can I "locate" which seal or seals are bad if I can not see any deposits on the plugs ..

did the engine rebuilder use sealer on the rocker arm stud threads that go into the intake ports? this is a big source of oil leaks into the intake port.

      Clem,

that is a very good question ... I really don't know and never really knew that it could be an issue if thread sealant wasn't used .. in fact it is the first time I ever heard of that possibility of getting oil into the cylinder that way .. maybe that could help explain why it only does it AFTER the engine gets up to temp .. almost no smoke at inital start up .. even it is has sat for days

you can tell by looking at the heads which studs go into the intake ports, just pull them and check for sealer.

          Dale,
It has been my experience that when seals and valve guides are a problem, the blue smoke occurs upon start-up. Reason is the oil leaks down into the combustion chamber, accumulates, and gets burned when the engine starts. Once it is running it's fine.

I don't know if oil leaking down the studs would cause this problem, but it sounds like the other contributors may know more that I do.

          Good luck,
          Gene
