    C1 Hinge Bolts '58

I am about ready to remount the hood, deck lid and trunk lid and doors after new paint. Which of the hinge bolts are painted and which aren't. Thanks in advance!

    David,
All of the hinge bolts are painted in one manner or another. The hood hinge bolts are painted with the blackout paint, and the trunk and decklid bolts are painted the same color as the underside of the trunk lid and decklid. The door hinges were mounted to the doors when the car was painted, so they would be painted as well. The door strikes however were mounted after all painting and should show no signs of overspray

Thanks, John. I thought as much, but wasn't sure. What's the best way to paint the bolt heads once everything is correctly aligned and tightened. Again, Thanks in advance!

John, while I'm on a roll, are the fasterners (screws) in the door end that hold the side windows channels etc. also painted? Again, Thanks!

            David,
I usually use an airbrush for such tasks. You can buy a fairly high quality airbrush for less than $80 and you will find it invaluable for those little touch-ups that are constantly needed to keep a car show ready. I do not believe that I have ever gotten ready for a judging without doing some touch-up. This is just the way it is when you drive a car and still try to have it judged.
All the fasteners in the door edge with the exception of the large Phillips screws that hold the rear glass run should be painted. The rear run screws were installed after the paint process and should show with zinc or cad plating. The latch assy was installed in the door and was masked around and should show a mask line at the radius between the door and latch. While you are touching up items, remember that the fuel overflow hose grommet and clamp should pe painted as well since they were installed before painting. The fuel filler neck and grommet were masked off however.

            Regards, John McGraw

Roy, your articles will be of great help to me. Twenty two years ago I did a quicky paint and body in Miami and then drove the car to Maine. Never did like the alignments of the doors, etc. I have the NCRS Restorer CD with articles. Should I look there for your articles or somewhere else. I hope to re-install in the next two to three weeks. Thanks for your assistance. David

John, thanks for the additional information. I doubt I'll ever have the car judged at the NCRS level, but it's nice to know the particulars so I can do a correct paint job. Again, thanks for the info. David
