Tom,
I think you need to specify the model of air filter you are asking about. You will get a different answer for the different size filters.

Terry I gave a simple answer when in fact this subect has lots of twists before 1980.

True Lyle, and I wasn't trying to contradict you. Tom asked for the last year square mesh was available, and you answered his question. I just wanted to point out that the question might be more complex than he was posing. Sounds like we might be settling a bar bet here.
