    Shoulder Belts 70

Where, exactly are the mounting holes for shoulder belts/retractors on a 70 convertible ? Were the holes drilled even if the car didn't have shoulder belts ? If not, can someone provide measurements and or a template for mounting as well as what bolts, plates etc. are needed. I know it's alot and I've been to the AIM and the pictures don't help. Thanks Jeff

    Re: Shoulder Belts 70...LONG!

Jeff, you probably already know this, but shoulder belts were standard on coupes and optional on convertibles. Only 475 units out of 17316 were so equipped. These are rare birds, but I can't imagine the optional shoulder harness making any significant change in the value of the car.

The 70 AIM seems to show that the coupe and convertible installations are the same. On UPC 1, Sheet F27, Seat belt and shoulder harness installation, the second line of the title block says "Model - 19000". IF there was a different installation for the convertible, there would be a special page, and the second line of that title block would read "Model - 19467".

I can tell you precisely where the shoulder belt retractors are located on a coupe. Note that there is a flat ledge about 7-8" below the very top of the wheelwell. This ledge is actually the housing for the frame member and extends all the way through the rear compartment. It is maybe 3-4" wide and then drops vertically to the compartment floor. The shoulder harness retractor mounts on the top of this ledge.

The retractor bolts to a reinforcing anchor plate that is attached to the underside of the body with four aluminum body rivets. For a detailed view of the reinforcement plate see UPC 1, Sheet B2. I wouldn't install the shoulder belts without these anchor plates; the shoulder belts would be good for appearance only without the plates. There are two holes for the retractor and anchor plate; the one for the retractor mounting bolt is 3/4" diameter, and there is a smaller 1/4" diameter hole for a locating pin on the anchor plate. Four additional holes are at the corners of the anchor plate for attachment with rivets.

Place a level on the ledge, and measure 12 7/8" horizontally rearward along the bottom of the level from the front edge of the fiberglass flange on the rear door jamb panel. Then, measure 1 7/8" outboard from the vertical face of the ledge; that will be the center of the threaded retractor mounting bolt hole in the anchor plate. The other five holes should be fairly easy to figure out using the reinforcing plate as a template.

Chuck is correct on the model usage. Within GM, whenever we used the model usage with 000, such as 19000, it meant that ALL 19XXX models had said usage.

        Re: Shoulder Belts 70...SHORT

My 70 did not have shoulder belts. I purchased the belts from a vendor and installed them in the existing holes and plates in the body. Look under the carpet, the holes are there and are filled with a plastic bolt to keep water out.
