    Master Cylinder paper tag

Hi to all. Now that Carlisle is over I would like someone to resolve a little problem. At Carlisle I was at the Paragon tent, looking at the white paper tags for the power brake master cylinder and came across a small discrepency. According to the 70-72 TIM & JG "A white tag with the broadcast code TG in red letters, for power brake, is usually attached to the rear bail." The JG goes on to state that the 70 & 71 manual brake code is YA while "in later 1972 the manual brake code is HC."

According to the Paragon catalog YA is for 1968-72 w/o PB, YC is 1967-79 MC decal while TG is the 1967-79 master cylinder decal. Obviously, the JG gets the most weight here but I am wondering why the apparent discrepency between the two. Paragon is usually very accurate in their reproductions.

Is there anyone out there with an original tag on the PB car? I have a Nov. 71 built 72 and would like to get a correct repro tag.

Gary If you can read the stamping at the machined fitting boss it will have the code . If your master cylinder is original I would buy what is stamped and I hope it is the same as the TIM/JG. Lyle

Lyle, good arguement here (of course I missed the obvious by not looking at the front boss of my MC). Unfortunately, the JG states "most 1972 Corvettes produced in Calendar year 1971, the flat at the front has PG stamped in it for power brake units." This is what is on my car. After conversations with the previous owners, I am led to believe that the MC is original. So, back at square one; I have a Nov. 71 built car with PG stamped on the boss but the JG says I should have TG on the tag. Ya gotta love trying to keep these cars original.

I would like to hear from owners of 1972's, that were built in calendar year 1971, that have power brakes with PG stamped on the front boss and still have their paper tags. Email me off line if you want to share your information.

        Hi Gary:

I have a very original Oct'71 PB car with the original broadcast tag still on the bail. You can see it at

It's not a very good picture ... I can take a better one if you need it.

          Gary,
I don't have a 1972, but before we put that bail tag information in the TIM&JG we looked at a lot of them, and have been looking at Bowtie cars for a while too. We were looking before anyone was reproducing the tags, so we had good data. Trust it, in spite of what Paragon has been stating for years. While I have never talked to Richard about it, I suspect they are advertising what they have available to sell.
There was a master cylinder print published in The Restorer some years back (volume 17, #2, Fall 1990)- I think it showed the tag, but I am not sure what date was on the print. I think Colvin may also have a master cylinder print in his Chevrolet by the Numbers book(s).

Mike, thank you for the photo. It helps a lot. Terry, thank you also. I have relied almost exclusively on the 70-72 JG during the judging process for my 72, but I did find an error or two. So, with that in mind, I had a nagging feeling about a TG tag on a PG stamped MC. You both have helped clear this up.
