    '74 Spark solenoid

I am looking for a 74 spark solenoid. Eklers and Dr. rebuild say they are discontinued. Is my best bet the salvage yards?

    Thank you,
    Brandon

What's a spark solenoid? Do you mean carb solenoid?

I was told that the guy with the tooling that makes that part is........well, he just doesn't want to make them anymore. I guess he's tired, and ready to be retired. Maybe he'll crank out a few more lots someday, but when that will be is anyones guess.

          Re: '74 Spark solenoid

Sorry it has taken me a little while to get back. I posted a message up but it didn't take and never got posted.

The "spark solenoid" I am referring to sits in front of the distributor and behind the carb. There is a hose that goes from the distributor vacuum to the spark solenoid, the a hose form this solenoid to the vaccum tube that runs to the left front of the carb. There is also a hose that runs from the solenoid to the T pipe that fits on to the intake fitting. The spark solenoid,DR Rebuild part # 3275620 "Spark control solenoid" is no longer carried by them or Eklers.

This is all for a '74 454 with a Q-jet carb. The whole vacuum system is missing on mine and I wanted to replace it. Right know, most of the ports on the carb are just plugged. I have the PCV system hooked up to the vapor canistor and that is about it. There is a hose going form the distributor vacuum to the correct port on the carb but bypassing the spark control solenoid. This whole thing is for emmissions. I am not concerened about emmissions because I am realy not going to be driveing the car all that much and I alread have my plates from the state. However, I thought by getting all of this straighted out it would help the enging run a little better than it is now. I am also missing the "Diverter Valve", the "EGR Valve", and the "EGR TVS lower port".

Now to top things off, I believe I have the magnetic pule distributor with the high energy ignition system. This came on some '74 and all '75-79 models. I do not know if these require a spark solenoid.

Well that is it. All help is greatly appriciated. If you all suggest leaving the ports on the carb plugged and skippig buying all of these emmissions parts then I probably will do that. I just figured with all of this missing I should probably buy them and put them in. I am far from a show car at the moment and have many things to buy. I am just trying to get the engine running as well as I can. If it is not needed I would rather spend the money else where.

          Thank you,
          Brandon

            Brandon -

Ignoring correct appearance for judging, it will run better the way it is now (distributor vacuum direct to the carb) than it would with all the missing TCS/TVS/EGR pieces installed, and none of the missing pieces have anything to do with the operation of an HEI distributor, if that's what you have (big cap with a square coil in the center).

Yes John, that is exactly what it looks like. Thank you for the advise. I think I will leave the stuff off for now. I think I will get killed by the judges anyway because I have a '74 engine in a '72 car. I do plan on getting everything back to "vette" shape though.

              Thank you again,
              Brandon
