    Clutch for 63 Fuelie

I will get my rebuild engine back in a couple weeks. I would like to get the clutch ready by then. Do I rebuild the original one ? How can you tell, if the clutch spring is bad ? How about the clutch flywheel ? should I resurface or just buy a new comlete clutch assy ? Who sells the most correct parts ?

I don't know of a way to check a clutch pressure plate assembly for spring pressure. However, I'd recommend just replacing it. The GM pressure plate and friction disc for your application are long since discontinued. However, you can obtain an OEM quality replacement manufactured by Sachs/LUK.

If your flywheel shows signs of surface cracking, blueing, or wear it can be resurfaced. I don't recommend this, but many folks do it with good results. A new flywheel is still available from GM for your application under GM #366860. However, the current list price of this unit is $303.94.

I don't know about your area, but I resurfaced and balanced my old flywheel for about $50.00.

It may be cheaper to buy a new pressure plate and clutch disk than to rebuild.

If you go ahead and get the pressure plate, take it when you get the flywheel done and balance the pressure plate also.

        Rebuilding service...

Glazier's Mustang Barn offers a service to rebuild rare original clutch assemblies, as I recall pressure plate recond costs about $100, if your original is not trashed. Disc rebuilding also available. Sounds like a good idea if your current clutch is genuine and you don't wanna go with NAPA.

Fort Wayne clutch will rebiuld your press [plate for about 1/3 of the cost of a new one and they don't require mega-hamstrings to depress and they won't let go when running a 3000 lb vet with 450 mhp thru the 1/4 mile. mike
