Is it possible for a May 1970 to an early 71 grill. Mine has the corr5ect fiber optic hole but the grille is held in with screws and not a screw and studs. If it is incorrect, anybody know where I can track one down.

Re: 1970 front grill
Steve, the TIM&JG indicates the earliest known original 71 style grille with the screws and fiber optic cable was observed on S/N 13656 (late June). Last May 70 serial is 10652. I believe the judges will want to see the early design on your car.
Are both sides the later design? I think I would let it judge first, and see what the impact was...those grilles are expensive if you can find one.- Top

Re: 1970 front grill *TL*
I'm glad you raised that car Chuck. The owner (second or third at the time I first saw it - it has now been through at least two more owners) swore the grilles were original. It wasn't until we got it into flight judging at a regional, with a good exterior judge, that the results of an early biff in the nose became apparent. I'll message Chuck Berge to remove that citation, which will move the first 1971 style grilles into 1971 production at about 1000 to 1300. I never claimed to be a good judge of the exterior.

Re: 1970 front grill
Terry, the third edition 70-72 TIM&JG carried over from the second edition the reference to S/N 13656 being the first 70 observed with the 71 grille design. Unfortunately, the third edition also omitted the words indicating that the early style grilles had been observed on 71s as late as S/N 1446.
If this is still believed true for the 71s (maybe a better documented 71 S/N?), perhaps words describing the last observed 70 style grilles should be put back into the next 70-72 TIM&JG edition. Typically, there is a change-over period for running changes, and it's a big help to owners (not to mention judges) to know that information when it exists.- Top

Re: 1970 front grill *TL*
I am aware of the third edition changes Chuck, I was still team leader when the third edition was produced. The information on the body damage to 1970 #13656 was not available when the third edition was produced.
My third edition (Printed winter 1999) reads "We have seen 1970 models as early as s/n 13656 with 1971 style grilles and 1971 models to s/n 1447 with 1970 style grilles."
What part of the early 1971 information did I miss?

Re: 1970 front grill
My mistake, Terry
I must have quit reading in mid-sentence. Looks like the third is good to go here with the excising of a few words. If my condition continues to worsen, and it probably will, I may need to have my wife read the TIM&JG aloud to me. (Yeah, that'll happen right after Hell becomes a ski resort.) :-)- Top

Re: 1970 front grill
Sorry to be a pain but I have a 15,000 mi '70 with a screw drilled through the bottom of the chrome just below the center of the L grill. Can this be filled and re-chromed? What is the difference between the 70 & 71's ??? One gray and the other is lighter in color.? Amber light on the 71? Been years since I gave this any thought. S/N 16301- Top

Re: 1970 front grill
Larry, the 71 grilles have two screws in the chrome rail on the bottom of the grille; 70 grilles have no screws on the bottom rail. Park light lenses are clear for 70,71 and use amber bulbs; 72 park light lenses are amber with clear bulbs.
If the grille only has one screw hole, it's possible it was a 70 grille with the stud pulled out, and the owner improvised a fix. It can definitely be filled and rechromed, but I don't know specifically if they can restore the stud. Try Paul's Chrome in Mars, PA mentioned by Mike McCagh in the post on Frankford Plating. Frankford may also do repairs. It won't be cheap, but since you can hardly find those grilles, cheap is relative.
BTW, S/N 16301 is a late July car. Check your trim plate on the driver's side front door jamb; there should be a stamp in the upper corner...a "G" followed by two digits. The two digits is your car's body build date.- Top

Re: 1970 front grill
Thanks I have been away so long that I forgot what the difference was. Old age is creeping up on me I guess. This is a car that had a bump on the front end and someone mickey moused the grill to hold to the fiberglass behind it with a hex head sheet metal screw.
I am sure that you are correct about the build date. This is a documented Baldwin Motion Phase III 454 LS-7 that was sold on 1-21-1971. That is according to the BOS from Baldwind Chevrolet, that I found in the compartment behind the pass seat when I got it home from Dallas back in '75. After I talked to Joel Labor day he said that is how long it took to get all the body modifications and drivetrain modifications done. It does show a $400 trade in?- Top

Re: 1970 front grill
Larry, it sounds like you have a nice car, and valuable too. When you get ready to get the grille repaired, check out Paul's Chrome Plating (website address below). They specialize in repairing and restoring rare chrome for show classic cars, and turn out excellent work...not cheap though.
