Searching for'69 BB - Info or Photos-Please help?

I know this is NOT a NCRS worthy car but I am in need of this info to restore a special Baldwin Motion Vette that I have owned for a long time.

If any of you grew up or were in the NY area back in 1969 or if you were into street racing or hot cars in general. I was wondering if you might have memories or names or better yet, pictures of Motion cars back then. I really need your help.

I own a now repainted black with a gold strip, '69 Cpe. that I beleive may have came from Baldwin Motion and I believe it to be the first car that Joel put the slant back window in. I have a Hi Perf Car's magazine showing it on the cover and a article showing it at the NY auto show with Zora standing next to it. I have talked to Marty the editor and he remembers the car was orange not red like it shows on the cover or his magizine.

I am looking for any pics of this car from back then. I realize it is hard to remember that far back but if anyone has any info that they can contribute I would be very gratefull. This is not a NCRS worthy car but it is a very special one of a kind car and they only made 10 of the Phase III GT's. I have the tank sticker with the 019 dealer code that shows it was sold to Baldwin when it was new. Now I have to find out if it was the actual car at the show and so far everything I see on mine or can find in magizine articles, corresponds with the car on the cover of the magazine.

The car in the show was Monaco Orange with a black strip down the hood and rear deck and around the tail lights and on to the sides of the rear of the car (6") inches. According to my tank sticker mine was the same color when new.

My question is if it was a TH400 or 4 Spd.car? I have found enough proof of everything else but the tranny. I can't find a pic of it anywhere that shows the transmission. Neither can anyone remember just what the car at the show had as far as the trans was?

I just came back from the Super car convention this Labor Day weekend at St. Louis where Joel Rosen was the guest speaker. He a great guy and is willing to try to find it if I want to pay him for the time to search his records ($1,500). Part of this fee is a letter of authency and I will glady pay the money for the search if I can be reasonably sure that this is the same car and not a copy. It would be worth it just to have a statement from him that it was the same car.

The main problem is that he claims there was quite a few that made a copy of his car using the body parts that they(Motion) sold back then. I realize that it would have been easy to make a copy. I just don't think anyone would have gone to the trouble that long ago. It was not that expensive for someone back then to buy the parts. But by the time they installed them and took the time to copy his car it would be too much trouble. They would not have saved much money once they were installed. Motion was really very reasonable on their labor prices to install the parts, I find it a stretch that this car is a copy when it would have been just as cheap to have him make you one to order.

I bought this car back in '73 and it had apparentely just been repainted black with a Gold double stripe down the car in about the same style that Motion used. (Email me for a pic) Now that I have stripped the paint off I have found where the SS-427 Impala emblem and the ford GT emblem they used, has been filled in on the back panel over the license plate.

I have owned this car all these yrs and am just now starting to restore it. I was a used vette dealer (Super Cars) in Tulsa back in the early '70's till '85. I also had a Vette bodyshop but got tired of dealing with the help and the poor workmanship problems they cause.

So If you might have lived in that area (Long Island NY) I am hopeful that you are familiar with Baldwin Motion prepared cars from back then? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I hope you can appreciate how frustrating it is to try to trace the providence of a old car and especially a dealer modified Vette.

I thank you for taking your time just to read this and if you can be of any help please let me know.

Larry NCRS has a place for cars with race history and I am not sure about the details so if you would find any history of racing you may want to check out the details. Lyle

          For NCRS American Heritage Award:
"To recognize unique Corvettes such as, but not limited to, GM Styling Cars, GM Experimental cars, and Factory or Vintage Race Cars. These cars must be a historically significant piece of Corvette heritage."

If indeed it is a Phase III GT, and THE first with the slant back window, it might be historically significant. It might be wise to get a copy of the Corvette Judging Reference Manual and read the section on the NCRS American Heritage Award requirements. They are a little longer than one can post here.

Thanks guys. That is info that will come in handy. I will check that out.
I found out today the answers to the last few questionable things that were still unanswered about my '69 Motion car. One was the side louvers having wire mesh behind them. I got some time to go to the shop and check to see if my car has the mesh and it did. When I first got my car the Motion gas cap had been moulded in with bondo. (This was not a good idea as the bondo would crack the paint when you put gas in the car) With my hevy Motion gas cap removed you can see the holes that were drilled in the deck/gas door area for the Motion cap to fit and the remaining bondo all around the gas door area to make it fit flush.

And NOW .... Last but not least, the most important item was if the car in the auto show was a TH-400 or not? Well, eariler today I found a magazine article on http://www.motionperformance.com/motion.html (go to the old magazine articles and it is at the very bottom) website that shows a rear shot of the back of Joel's car's rear window. It shows the gas cap moulded in and if you click on the pic of just the car, it will blow up bigger and you can clearly see the automatic shift knob with the little chrome button on top through the back window.

That was the final and most important Item that I needed to re-assure myself that for the last 30 years, I do indeed own the very same car as the car in the pictures in the Magazine articles.

With every picture that has been published of Joel's car, and that I have been able to find and compare my car to the old magazine articles of that time, and the statment from Marty Schoor that it was the same color as my car and not red like it looks on the cover of his Car's magazine. Combined with the info from the original tank build sheet, showing it originally came from Baldwin Chev when new.

I can feel alot more confident that this was his his first Phase III GT. I guess it is now time to send Joel some $$.

Thanks to all of you for your interest and support.

Larry; That is so cool, I went to the web-site and under the "wild advertising" heading, go to the 69 vette ad and you can read that they were offered with 4-spd. or auto in the ad. Thought you'd like to see that. Good thing you have a 69 cause those 70's are borderline ugly with the headlights. I took a gas-cap off of a 69 just like the one you mentioned and it was bondo'ed on the same exact way you described, did it for a restoration and all we had to do was sand all the bondo out of the original glass resses area, was'nt a motion car though. Hey I still have it, e-mail me if interested, it is in real good shape and I do not even know why I still have it. David

                  Larry,
Check the date on the trim tag. It might be E07 or E09 - December 7, or December 9. So8/10/12 = December 10, 1968. Make sense now? This must be the night for your trim tags.

There might be some useful info at www.yenko.net. I know the URL states Yenko, but the site is about all Chevrolet 'dealer' cars. I believe there's even a Baldwin Motion discussion forum at the site. I do know the site has been around for quite some time. The August feature car is a '69 Baldwin Motion Corvette.

Roger that is one site that I already haunt quite a bit.

Oh by the way the car on the cover of Aug '69 and that looks red is actually Hugger Orange (almost Red) and is now sitting in my garage. It was freshly painted black W/gold strips when I came across it in Tulsa OK back in late '73. I have had it ever since.

I am desperately searching for the owner or any pic's of it back then.

I have the same magazine artice with Joel's signature on the cover. I talked to Marty Schorr labor day about the car and he confirmed that it was actually orange w/black stripe.

                      Thanks for the info anyway.
