    Master Cylinder Number Question

I have a master cylinder core 5460346. Am wondering what this unit is correct for. Looks like a correct Corvette master cylinder with the bleeders. Checked my 70-72 judging guide and it says the correct one is 5480346. Thoughts?

    Thanks -

    Pat

      Pat-----

"6's" and "8's" are very difficult to distinguish for casting numbers. To be honest, I used to think that the number was 5460346 but I've seen it everywhere else quoted as 5480346. So, I've assumed that my "interpretation" of the number was wrong. In any event, whether 546 or 548, we are talking about the same piece----the master cylinder used for all 1967 Corvettes with J-56 and many PB-equipped Corvettes from 1968 to at least 1973. 1967 to about 1973 versions have bleeder valves, whereas later ones do not.

Pat The 73 TIM&JG lists 5460346 as a 73 correct p/b part. It would have a date stamp on the boss where the brake lines attach and this would tell when it was made. This might help to see when it was made. Lyle

One may see the blueprints in The Corvette Restorer V17, #2, Fall 1990. The number 5480346 is easier to read there. While you are back that far in your collection check out the story on casting dates in V 17, #3, Winter 1991.

Terry Well I have the NCRS Restoration and Maintenance book but those articles must have not made the cut.. I will try to find the older copys of the Restorer in the driveline and buy some for winter time reading. Lyle

              Lyle,
You will need the paper copies of The Restorer because the print didn't make the CD. The story(s) and photos are on the CD, but not the master cylinder print. I haven't looked, but one of Alan Colvin's "....by the Numbers" books may have the master cylinder print.
