    71 Convertible Top Pad

My 71 had a new top when I bought it but it has the original top pads inside. They look terrible. Does anyone know if the pads can be replaced without removing the top?

OR - Does anyone have any tips on making the pads look newer without removing them?

    OR - Any other suggestions?

    Thanks

    Peter------

The pads cannot be replaced without first removing the top material. Absolutely no way to do it, at all.

Assuming that the existing pads are just cosmetically hurting and not otherwise deteriorated, you might be able to improve the looks of them by cleaning as best you can and spraying with an interior dye that matches their original color. You would have to do this very carefully and while masking/protecting surrounding areas.

It amazes me that someone replaced the top without replacing the pads. Usually, this is part of a top replacement procedure.

On another subject: your name looks familiar; are you the guy that got married at the National Corvette Museum around opening day?

Thanks for the help. I may need to take the top off. Is that difficult to do?

No, I wish I would have been married at the Corvette Museum.

      Thanks for the help!

In my opinion, removal of the top material is best left to an automotive upholsterer. Some hobbyists are able to do it, but unless you're prepared to do a lot of intensive study and spend a lot of time at it, I think that the professional approach is the way to go.
