While looking at a 65 Fuel car with 16,000 documented miles offered by the original owner it was found to have D O T tires although in correct size ,sidewall and maker. This car is as good as any I have seen and he insists the tires were on the car when new, curious, no ??
When did D.O.T. first appear ?

"J"----
If I recall correctly, the D.O.T. markings had to appear on tires manufactured after 1-1-68, although some tires manufactured before that date may also have received the markings. However, I'm talking about a few months before that date, not several years. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: When did D.O.T. first appear ?
Joe Lucia is, again, on the olde money. DOT rule making appeared in waves depending on what part(s) you're talking about. Here, it's clear you refer to tires and the effective date was 1/1/68....
Had a unique opportunity in the UK last summer to judge a '68 DRIVEN (hear that folks that think we don't drive 'em) from Belgium. Car had 19K original miles and was wearing slightly worn original tires. Spare in boot was untouched and bore an adhesive backed paper label with DOT sequence number (includes date of mfgr) showing a late Dec '67 build.
Items like turn signal flashers didn't see DOT regulation until '72. So, different times for different components. All of these milestones are documented in respective NCRS Judging Guides. So, I'd say there isn't a snowball's chance those specific tires were the factory originals for the '65 you looked at.....- Top
