    An add-on to Duke's response. While you have the gear off the mainshaft, shim the gear(if neccessary) so you have .002-.007" endplay. Shim kits are available at most Corvette parts retailers/mailorders for around $5.

      Duke,

      Thanks again. I will do this. I also found the vacuum advance to be leaking, I replaced the vacuum pod and hose. It must have had multiple problems. Sorry to make you re-visit a past issue here, but I am just getting on board with this site. You don't know how much I appreciate this help

          Hi....Check the termianl connections at the dist to harness connection. This will give you this symptom too. If the colours got reversed in the 3 way connector. The engine will time both ways, but the "wrong" way gives you about 30 degrees of advance when you are trying to set initial timing.......
