Painting of my "58 is just days away. A CC tip in their catalogue says to mount the door posts before painting. The AIM says fill the hole where the attaching bolt goes through at the front of the door. Question - fill the hole with what? I purchased the inner door bolt access hole cover kit that comes with 10 round and two square shaped pieces. Does one of the round ones go into the hole on each door as described above? Questions - Install door post first so paint will cover the filled access hole to the front of the post? How perfect does the finished surface have to be? I know the main weather seal covers most of the area. Thanks again! David

Re: C1 - Door Post Mounting
David,
I do it just like the General did it. I fill the hole with non-hardnening body putty (dum-dum) to within about 1/4" of the top of the hole and then top it off with bonding adhesive. If you don't have any bonding adhesive, you can substitute body filler instead. Just smooth it out as well as possible and dont worry about sanding it much. The Factory put the posts on after painting and just touched up the plug with a little paint. I prefer to do it this way as well. Resist the temptation to fill the hole completely with bonding adhesive or body filler, as it will make it almost impossible to remove it if you ever need to. With the soft dum-dum behind the plug, you can just hit the plug with a hammer and screwdriver and it will fall apart.
