    voltage regulator

My 65 327/350 roadster likes to consume voltage regulators. It appears that
the current one has malfunctioned after less than 2000 miles, the third in 1 to 2 years(the one on purchase was bad). Is there any reason that a solid state regulator should be less compatible with the system
than the original type regulator(other than maybe cheaper less durable materials)? Does anyone know if the AC/Delco replacements sold in bulk
are all solid state? Thanks for input.

Don't know about product offerings from Delco Remy, but you can get a solid state V-Reg packaged as a traditional '515 regulator 'look alike' from the JC Whitney catalog for a whooping $10. In fact, if you're into 'surgery' you can pop the rivets holding the SS relay's plain lid to the base, pop the rivets holding the SS circuit board to the base, gut the electro-mechanical innards out of your existing '515 relay, do a transplant and wind up with a correct looking, correctly dated, Delco Remy '515 regulator that's fresh/modern, 100% solid state and good controlling alternators with output ratings of up to 100 amps....

Do you think the practice of removing and connecting the negative battery terminal in lieu of a cut-off switch could damage a solid state regulator or the alternator diodes?

I've been doing this for a year with no ill effects, but I've been wondering.

Nope! Disconnecting the battery's neg wire open circuit's the WHOLE electrical system. Without a ground reference there is NO potential voltage difference: dead is DEAD....
