I agree. Remember that the tach needle and its associated hardware (shaft, spool, etc)are not damped, so its momentum will cause it to overshoot and oscillate (somewhat). Think of it as pushing a child ahead on a swing; after you let go, the child continues ahead until gravity takes over. In this case, the "pusher" is the cable, and the "child" is the needle assembly. For my money, I'd rather have instruments that are slightly underdamped, than overdamped . There are others who can put this in more elegant terms, but that is the gist of it.

That is why I like to use GM spedometer cable lube...some kind of a blue "sticky" grease that damps the oscillations and doesn't get too stiff when cold. I can't remember the part number, but it really works. The graphite lubes always seem to create these oscillations as they remove the damping....Craig- Top
