I'm having problems with my AFB carb on a rebuilt 300 hp engine. It is running pretty rich. I cleaned it up, put in a kit, check float levels, etc, but no luck. Am I missing an adjustment or something, or is it time for a new one? Any suggestions?

Re: 64 Carter AFB Carb
A few questions to help narrow the search, is the carb running rich with the engine hot or cold or all times? After the rebuild, were the bakelite heat insulator and the stainless steel plate on top of it installed in the correct sequence? Has the choke been adjusted and does it open fully? lastly, were the metering rods installed in the secondaries? The answers to these questions may help start on the way to diagnosing your problem.- Top

Re: 64 Carter AFB Carb
From the looks of the plugs and exhaust, I'd say it runs rich all the time. The gasket, then insulator, then SS baffle are under the carb. (I tried a second gasket above the baffle too) The choke sets fine, warms and releases completely open. The metering rods (refered to as step up rods in instruction sheet?) were installed as before. The ball check in bottom of bowl was replaced. Floats are not binding and in good shape. I noticed the instructions referred to a dash pot that was not in my carb but kit noted parts listed not for all carbs. Rebuilt engine has also been using quite a bit of oil. After 2000 miles, I thought it would settle in! Thanks for any help.- Top
