'60 gas tank - keep it?

When I bought my car, it hadn't been driven in 12 years, so the fuel system was a mess. The gas tank was full of lacquer-y gummy gas residue, so I replaced it with a NOS tank. My wife is tired of seeing the old one laying around, so I need some advice - keep it or dump it?

Personally, I don't have an issue with getting rid of it, but thought it would be prudent to find out if I should have it refurbished so if at some point in the future (WAY in the future!) if I need or want to sell the car, it might add to its value in the eyes of someone more obsessive than myself. The car, while not perfect, is almost completely original in all other respects, including the engine & trans.

    Any thoughts?

    thanks -Matt

Re: '60 gas tank - keep it?

    Matt,
I would offer it to anyone that would come and get it! I will NEVER again put an original tank back into a car that I have restored unless it was perfect. I had to clean crud out of my fuel filter almost every month on my 60, and I thought that I did a great job of cleaning it! The repro's are so good and nobody can see them anyway after installation, that I could not ever see a reason for not putting in a new one. The aggravation of having to clean the filter all the time, more than outweighed the money that I saved on the tank. I had trash get into the float needle at flight judging, and it almost cost me a big deduct on OP's check!

    Regards, John McGraw

      John -

Thank you, your advice sounds completely reasonable to me.

I should have included this in the previous post, I guess. If anyone's interested in this foul-smelling thing, I will be happy to give it to them, rather than trash it. I'm in the SF Bay Area, if you want to pick it up, send me a message - you're welcome to it. I don't know if it leaks or not, there wasn't any evidence of leakage, but you never know.

I did the opposite of you with my '62 - I refurbished and kept the old tank. Worked great for me (so far). In retrospect, I probably should have bought a new one. I refurbished mine with the Eastwood kit. The Eastwood kit and the chemicals and paint for the outside cost about 1/2 the price of a new tank. Not a difficult job, but time consuming, messy, and physically challenging. At the end, I was left with a few jugs of chemicals for which I had to make a special (toxic waste) dump run. Again, not a huge deal, but a pain. I saved maybe $100.

              C1 dirty gas tank

              Hi Guys,
I think I too have an old tank headache. I've had some problems on my '62 with a bit of fuel starvation while accelerating at higher speed. I checked the filter and lots of fine dust was found in it. The dust was not picked up by a magnet so it was'nt rust and under a microscope it did'nt look like sand (silica) but it sure did look like dried gas sediment. Old tanks that have dried out can offer a very fine (like dust) powder that hopefully will be picked up by the filter. A new tank is the way to go. My motor is not original so I just use a fram or hastings filter at about 5 bucks a piece and will probably change it every 3 months or sooner if needed. Do be careful about the old tanks. They can be a real pain where the sun don't shine...Pete

Yes you do. If she ain't happy you might have to sell car, after all she found it. It always amazes me the number of people who don't understand that a happy wife/husband makes for a very happy husband/wife.
