Re: Stock GM Are Discontinued
Stock GM pads are now being serviced with AC-Delco parts - Gr. 5.017, GM #18028641 "Pad Kit". Each axle set ($42.76 each, list) is in an AC-Delco box and includes the self-adhesive insulator shims and a warranty card from CarQuest (Brake Parts Inc., McHenry, Illinois). Just bought two sets from my local Chevy dealer a couple of months ago.- Top

Depends on what you call " best".
If you're not hung up on GM, look at the link below for something that suits you. Raybestos sells good products.

Re: Stock GM Are Discontinued
Bob-----
If you're referring to the original GM pads used in PRODUCTION and available in SERVICE for many years, you are correct. These pads, which were fully organic and contained large amounts of asbestos, are GM discontinued. It's been illegal to sell them, even from existing stock, since the very early 1990's.
These were, in my opinion, absolutely the finest brake pads you could use on a 65-82 Corvette. Outstanding braking, VERY easy on rotors, low noise, low dust and LONG life. What more could one ask for in a brake pad? That's why I "stocked up" before (and since) the sales ban [none for sale]. I figure that I've got enough to last me if I live to be 500 years old.
The current GM SERVICE brake pads are the ones that John described. I've not used them, but I would have great confidence in them and that's what I'd otherwise use. As a matter of fact, I might even try a set of these pads and see how they work for me. Avoiding exposure to asbestos is a good thing, notwithstanding the excellence of the original pads and the fact that I have plenty available.
As John also pointed out, these pads are NOT manufactured by GM or, even, their successor parts manufacturing operation, DELPHI Automotive. Many parts for older model GM cars (or, even current GM cars) are not manufactured by GM or DELPHI, although they come packaged in GM or ACDelco boxes. However, one does have the assurance that the parts meet GM's specifications. That's not necessarily true of parts produced by the same manufacturer, but packaged in their own or other brand boxes.
With brake pads, it's possible to gain some insight, though. Brake pads contain an "edge code". If the "edge codes" are the same, then the brake pad formulation is the same. If the edge codes are different, the brake pads may or may not be the same. Likely, they are NOT.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Stock GM Are Discontinued
I just ordered 2 sets (1 for front, 1 for back) from gmpartsdirect.com for $21.38 each axle set, and for this order, the total shipping was only $8.55 for a total of $51.31. Figure this is the way to go since I don't have the stock Joe has of originals....and my 67 is getting new VB calipers soon. Sure hope they don't eat hard on the rotors, the orgiginals sure were great and easy on the rotors....Craig- Top
