    mounting C1 horns

Years ago I took my car apart. I just had my horns rebuilt and believe it or not, I can't see where they are supposed to go. I seem to recall they came out easy with the hood off, but the hood is back on and I don't really want to take it off again if I don't have to. All my reference books say there is a mounting plate but I can't seem to feel them and can't find a picture of mounted horns.. They can't go to far away from the wiring harness. I don't think I'm as stupid as I sound, but could someone draw me a picture or send a photo of mounted horns. Thanks.

    Richard,

You are right in that they are mounted up near the wiring loom and if memory serves well there is a "mounting" bracket which is really a nut welded to a plate which is about 1 x 1 1/2" that sits behind a hole in the front inner fender near the radiator support.

I may be confused and if no one else replies I'll take a pic on the weekend or earlier if possible.

    Mark.

      Richard,
They mount up behind the grille and can't be removed from on top. The easiest way to remove or install them is by pulling the grille out and working through the grille opening. When properly installed the trumpet of the horns will point slightly downward right above the grille opening on both sides.

If you don't want to remove the entire grille cross-bar, you can remove one "tooth" on each side. It's much harder to see what you are doing using this method but you avoid the possibility of having to drop the license plate/bumperette assy.

          Re: mounting C1 horns

Richard, a year ago I installed my 1960 horns by reaching through the grill teeth. It was a major PITA! and it is a blind operation. I have the hood off of my car now and if I had to install horns or remove them again; I wouldn't hesitate to remove the hood. With the hood off, it will take about 5 minutes to install both horns and position them. Just scribe a mark where the hood hinges go on the hood; then you will know exactly where the hinges go for re-installation. You shouldn't be able to see the scribe mark after the hood is in place. Hope this helps.

I "scribe" the hood hinge-to-hood location with "White-Out", and rub it off after re-installing the hood; leaves no marks on anything.
