Hello everyone, I just had new webbing put on my seat belts by snakeoyl. (they did a great job). These are 67 belts (late production, 21651 out of 22940). I did not have snakeoyl redo the buckles. (they were in pretty nice shape). These buckles have the chevrolet bowtie in the center of the button. the bowties are painted black with some of the black paint worn off. Someone told me that the bowie area should be painted blue and the rest of the inside would be black. Can anyone verify this for me. Furthermore, can anyone give me any ideas on where to get the correct color black and (blue paints) if needed. Many thanks in advance... Tony 800.837.0305

Re: 67 seat belts
Tony----
All paint used on 1967 seat belt buckles was black. There was never any blue paint used on the bow-tie logo or otherwise on the belt buckles.
As far as re-painting the buckle painted portions, I think that is something that would have best been done before having Ssnake-Oyl restore the belts. For maximum durability, I think that I would have taken the buckles sans belts, painted them and baked the buckles to improve the durability of the painted surfaces. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 67 seat belts
Tony,
I think I have some information to at least get you part of the way there. I have an unrestored "project" car (Feb 67 build date) that still has the original seat belts with dated tags. The bowtie in the center is blue and the area surrounding the bowtie (square) is black.
The letter top-edges and bowtie emblem top-edge show un-painted shiny metal (which looks like chrome), BUT my outer bowtie "sides" are painted the same blue as the inside, not black like the surrounding area.
I'm not certain of the finish/hues. The blue I have appears dull/flat and maybe it was gloss at one time. Mine is a "dark" medium blue, lighter than navy. The black surrounding area appears to be a semi-flat black.
Hope some of that can help. Best wishes. Tom- Top

Re: 67 seat belts
Joe,
Sorry, but I must have been typing while you were posting. I just now noticed your post which, after having gotten familiar with your wealth of knowledge, sent me running back to check my 67 seat belt buckles.
To the best of my knowledge they are untouched originals (as well as look it) and the date tags read Hamill 1967, Model C-10, date stamped ?E67. I took a high powered light and magnifying glass just to make sure, but they are exactly how I described them: blue bowtie, black surrounding area.
Do they go to some other passenger car, maybe some other year? Thanks but I won't sleep tonight. Tom.- Top

Re: 67 seat belts
Tom----
Please, get some sleep. It sounds to me as if your belts are original, for sure. I've never seen these buckles with the blue logo. Also, every reference that I've checked, including Barbara Spear's book on Corvette seat belts, seems to indicate that the 67 buckle painting was all black. However, like most things in this hobby, NOTHING is absolute. Based upon your description of the buckles and the dates on your belt labels, I'd conclude that yours are original. So, I've just learned something that I'll store away in the ol' noggin for future reference. That's one of the great things about being wrong---when you find out you're wrong, you learn something new. When you find out you're right about something, you don't learn anything! In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 67 seat belts
Shucks, Joe, it's no biggie. You've probably forgotten more stuff than some of us will ever know.
Just as a side note for reference, the 1967 Judging Manual (2nd Edition, 2nd printing), Interior Section, page 30, Seat Belt Buckles has: "The background in the bowtie is blue." I don't write the stuff but its there. Thanks for putting me at ease, maybe I will get some sleep. Tom- Top
