    Trailering a 1960

I am trailering a 1960 and need to know where the safest place to tie the car down. Is it going to hurt the car if I put the tie down over the rear axil? I do not want to harm the brake lines. Where is the best place to tie down the front end? Is there anything else I should know about trailering this car? Thank you.

I wouldn't. It isn't just because of the brake lines, but because of pulling on the axle. You also allow the suspension to work which wears the suspension parts, so you might as well drive. Bouncing loads set up complex oscillations. If you use nylon straps, you probably will not crush the brake lines, but you could tear them loose. Chains will definitely tear up the brake lines.

I would tie to the frame. Read this for the reasons.

I trailer my 56 frequently. I use the nylon straps (10,000lb capacity) with a racheting handle. For the rear, I first slip the strap out of the rachet. Then I place the loose end of the strap BETWEEN the axle housing and the brake line on one side of the rearend center section, go UNDER the center section, and then back beteen the housing and brake line on the other side of the center. Then I hook the hooks of the strap and the rachet to the rear of the trailer (or tie down loops if your trailer has them). For the front, I place one hook over the top of the rear of the lower A-frame, bring the strap somewhere around the front of the trailer (around under the tongue of my trailer) then back to the lower A-frame on the other side. I rachet the front then the back, TIGHT. I tow, and have towed, both my 56 Vette and my 70 Chevelle conv MANY miles like this on a 16ft open trailer with no problems, ever. (well, once, I had a rear trailer tire blow out on the way to an NCRS regional, but I have a good spare attached to my trailer)
