    C1 Rear Axel Ratio

I wanted to determine the rear axel ratio of my 58. Rotated the wheel one revolution and the rear axel unit only rotated 1 3/4 turns. Does that indicate a problem with the gears?

    Re: C1 Rear Axel Ratio

if you want to determine rear ratio, assuming its a non-posi, jack car up, have someone restrain one wheel, then rotate driveshaft until unrestrained wheel makes one 360 degree revolution.cont revolutions of driveshaft. suppose driveshaft rotates 4 turn to one turn of unrestrained wheel---if thats the case the rear axle ratio is 4;1. if its 3.08 driveshaft revolutionms per one wheel revolution, its a 3.08;1 ratio. All this assumes the tranny is a 1;1 in high gear. BTW, place tranny in high gear before conduction your experiment. good luck, mike

It will be a whole lot easier to turn the tire if the transmission is in neutral.

This doesn't sound right to me. Seems like with one wheel restrained, the other wheel would go twice as many revolutions, so you'd continue to rotate the driveshaft until the free wheel rotated TWO complete revolutions. Then, if the driveshaft had been rotated 4.1 (or so) times, you'd have a 4:11. Judging from the original post, would he have a 3.50/3.55/3.56?

Also, if you place the tranny in gear, you'd have to be cranking the engine to get the shaft to turn (unless you're a lot stronger than I am), or have someone depress the clutch. I'd rather leave it in neutral.

What you describe is likely about a 3.55 - 1 ratio.

Mike, my brain stays disengaged most of the time. It ocassionally slips into gear when I least expect it.
