    66 427/425 Flywheel - Attn Joe Lucia

Joe - I have somehow misplaced the part number for the flywheel GM offers for the 66 L72 engine. I decided to buy a new one versus check the one still installed on my old 68 427 installed in my 66, and buy a new one for the correct engine I am building now. Also, I have a new GM pressure plate (11") squirelled away in storage for my 74 project car, along with an 11" 26 spline GM pressure plate. I decided I would like to use this NOS pressure plate along with a new flywheel on my 66 L72. I realize the friction disk is not the correct spline for this, and was wondering about using the LUK disk with the GM flywheel and plate. I am hoping the part I bought for the 350/454 application in 1989 through service parts is the correct pressure plate....I don't have the P/N handing since it is stored in a box. Will my plan work...and what flywheel and LUK pressure plate do I need for this 11" setup? Thx, Craig

Forgot to mention, one of the reasons for this plan is my engine machinist still will balance the flywheel, pressure plate, and harmonic balancer as part of my already paid for engine balance. I realize they are all neautral balance for this engine....but want to finish off the engine asm and haven't pulled the car out of storage to remove the old engine...Craig

Also - is there a special GM bolt I should order to attach the pressure plate to the flywheel, and what is the part number? Thx, Craig

        Craig-----

The flywheel you need is GM #3991469. This is a 1971-era SERVICE replacement flywheel for your 1966 14" application. It is identical to the original flywheel, GM #3889694, except that it may be dual-drilled for both 10-1/2" and 11" clutches. The 3991469 (or, its single drilled, PRODUCTION-only equivalent)was used in PRODUCTION for most internally balanced, 14" flywheel applications from about 1971 onward.

The pressure plate assembly that you have is almost certainly a GM #3884598. This unit will work for all 1966 through 1981 Corvettes with 11" clutches (which, is mostly all that Corvettes used during the 69-81 period and used by most big blocks, except L-88, during the 66-69 period).

The 3391469 flywheel, 3884598 pressure plate assembly, and a Sachs/LUK 11" friction disc with 10 spline hub will work perfectly for your 1966 big block application. I don't have the Sachs/LUK part number for the disc. The GM number for this disc was GM #10148045 and this piece was manufactured by Sachs. You may be able to cross-reference it from that part number or the earlier GM part number (manufactured by Borg and Beck) of GM #3908960.

The GM/Kent-Moore clutch alignment tool is useless. Use an old 1-1/8" OD 10 spline input shaft for disc alignment. There is no other GM tool ever available or required for pressure plate installation.

Joe - as always, thx so much. At Carlisle this year, I stopped at Ed Hartnett's booth who we took that 4 speed class several years ago at Bloomington and bought two alignment tools made from old input shafts, both 10 and 26 spline for $6 each. So I am set there....thx again for the great input!....Craig

            make sure the clutch disk

slides freely on the trans input shaft.i have used lapping compound on the splinds to get a smooth action. make sure you clean the parts real good to remove any lapping compiund.

Thx Clem - makes good sense for a smooth engagement. Will do...thx!...Craig
