    C-1 Pistons Needed

Trying to find a supplier for 283 pistons. Will be a 40 or 60 overbore and would like to find 10 or 10.5 compression ratio. Any supplier would be of great help. Thanks in advance.

Although pistons for 283's are becoming a vanishing breed, there are still an adequate number of options for you.

The first thing that I would do is to check to see if Keith Black-Silvolite still makes a piston for your application. I'm fairly certain that there will be choices available in their Silvolite line, but you're better off using their hypereutectic Keith Black series if they still make a 283 piston. Their web-site has been down for awhile. I'd call them. They are located in Carson City, NV and their phone number is 775-882-7790. The Silvolite line of cast pistons will be equal or better than the cast pistons originally used for all 283 cid engines. The KB hypereutectics will be far better. The "perfect" choice, if they still make a 283 piston. By the way, if you call them you will just be doing so to get the technical information regarding available pistons and part numbers. They do not sell pistons direct, but they can tell you who you can order them from in your area.

A flat top piston in a 283 will yield about 9.5 to 10:1 compression ratio. That's what I recommend that you use.

Also, cast pistons are available for 283 cid engines with, at least, 30 or 60 overbores, from Federal Mogul-Sterling pistons. These will be cast pistons that will be as good or better than the originals used in all 283 cid engines.

Beyond that, Federal Mogul also makes forged pistons for 283 cid engines in their Speed Pro/TRW line of pistons. Flat tops and domed pistons are available for a variety of compression ratios and most overbores are also available. Forged pistons were NEVER originally used in any 283 engines and I don't recommend forged pistons for street operation. However, it's an option if you so choose.

I can confirm the availability of the KB Hyp. pistons for this application because I just used a set in my 283 a couple months back. -k

        when using HB hyp pistons

make sure the machist understands the difference in the fit of the pistons and top ring end gap.

I saw these on the NHRA Board as replacement pistons listed for a 283 in Stock Eliminator .

I think I still have a set of pistons w/rods around somewhere. The block froze and broke. Still have the shortblock somewhere? What would they be worth?

              Larry-----

Only eBay can "tell you for sure". I'm not really very "up" on value of parts like this. I'll offer this, though: most folks looking for pistons need an oversize piston. So, a standard size piston might not be too popular. By now, I don't expect that there are too many serviceable, standard bore 283's around. However, someone with a valuable block who decides it's worth "sleeving 8 holes" could use them.

Another thing is that these 283 pistons were all conventional cast pistons. They did the job just fine but, these days, folks are usually looking for stronger pistons. Plus, no one can really tell what pistons are in an engine, anway. Nevertheless, the pistons might have substantial value to a C1 "purist".

Re:So what would 270 hp. Std bore be worth?

As Joe mentioned, the demand for 'nominal bore' pistons/rings is pretty low. We had the occassion at our shop to 'save' an original 283 once by laying in eight sleeves (one time in +20 years of working on these cars). When we called around to order up a matching set of pistons/rings, MOST of the suppliers were SHOCKED to hear we wanted NOMINAL dimensions and questioned our order not believeing they'd heard the request properly!

Your market for these parts would be for that engine with all eight holes sleeved (rare) or that Last of the Mohicans, NOS service replacement bare block out there (even rarer)....
