I expect that by 1971 the "anachronism" was corrected and removed from the service manuals. It sometimes takes GM a long while to "root out" these sorts of things. I am quite certain that there is no difference with respect to end play for 1971 and later distributors as opposed to earlier distributors of the same design.
As I mentioned, I have several NOS distributors, some dating back to 1965, and all have an end play of right at .060". Curiously, this is almost "right smack in the middle" of the .030" to .086" end play shown in the specifications and drawings for these distributors.
