    VIN Numbers

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could answer a question for me. On a 69 Corvette, are the VIN numbers on the windshield post and the frame supposed to match the I.D. number on the build sheet? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, in a perfect world these nubers should match but you know our world isn't always perfect. How do your numbers compare?

        Randy:

Build orders were document generated directives to manufacture Corvettes with a specific combination of production options. They were created before vehicles received VIN designations. If by the term "build order" it is meant to mean tank sticker, then VINs were not included among the information! Tank stickers are really "Corvette Order Copies". The actual build sheet was called a "Corvette Order".This document was more involved, and separate from the tank sheet. At the point of body drop the "Corvette Order" was filled out with specific information including the VIN, transmission build date, differential build date, the final car line assembly date and key numbers.

"Shipper's Copies" also had VINs in 1969, as did the "wholesale Invoice". The Wholesale Invoice was the financial arrangement between the dealer and Chevrolet. Of corse the window sticker had the VIN too.

The large numbers seen on the top of a "Corvette Order Copy" (tank sheet) are the Saint Louis "Plant Identification Number" for that job and the "Dealer Order Number" which followed all the way from the originating dealer.
